Crown Charity Challenge No. 4 – April
About the charity
The Life After Breast Cancer Fund is a fundraising campaign for the medical research charity RAFT (The Restoration of Appearance and Function Trust). RAFT is working to improve the current breast reconstruction surgeries available to women post mastectomy as a way to help them have a better life after breast cancer and a returned sense of normalcy.
Undergoing breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is an important step in regaining quality of life for women who’ve been through breast cancer. But many women choose not to have the surgery because the results can be unpredictable and lead to the need for multiple operations. With an estimated 40% of women suffering from depression post-mastectomy, the operation can also have a huge impact on emotional wellbeing.
At RAFT we believe the situation needs to change and we want to see the same dedication and resolve going into breast reconstructive surgery as there has been into fighting this awful disease. The aim of our Life After Breast Cancer Fund is to ensure that women who have had a mastectomy have access to the very best treatment possible and RAFT’s scientists are engaged in practical research that is on the threshold of providing a much brighter future for patients in the UK and worldwide.
The main aim of the Life After Breast Cancer Fund is to raise £2 million in the coming 3 years to improve breast reconstruction surgery.
